Lucasfilm, Big Rock Ranch

Filmmaker George Lucas selected the overall scheme and approved every detail of this office and entertainment complex.

Big Rock Ranch is the site for a 56-acre multimedia office complex, boasting five buildings with a total of 185,000 square feet in tech and office space. The complex serves as the professional home of 200-plus Lucasfilm employees.

Modeled after the early work of Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie-style architecture, the project consists of a main office building constructed near a lake; a commons building housing a 210-seat theatre, a cafeteria, a private dining; a daycare and fitness center; an archive building, a gatehouse, and a below grade parking structure.

The exterior consists of custom mahogany wood windows, plaster, veneer stone, copper flashings, extensive stained/sealed redwood trim, and flat concrete roof tiles. The interior has several wood-burning fireplaces, custom wood staircases, oak trim at walls and ceilings, hardwood flooring, handmade wool carpet, stained glass skylights, and residential-like restrooms.

Big Rock Ranch was designed to LEED Gold NC standards, but the project was never submitted for certification.
