Bio-Rad, Laboratory Building 6000

Bio-Rad Laboratories’ 143,000 square foot Building 6000, a Life Science Laboratory and Manufacturing facility, is the largest building on Bio-Rad’s 67-acre Hercules campus.

The ground floor accommodates a manufacturing unit relocated from Richmond. The second floor houses chemistry, electronic, and optical laboratories; environmental rooms, a plastics assembly area and offices for the Life Science Group’s Imaging Products Division and Lab Devices Division.

The building was designed to blend in with the natural landscape and match the original campus building style, which was developed and implemented almost two decades earlier. The manufacturing facility shell has a standing-seam metal roof and integral color precast-concrete panels. The structure also includes high-performance reflective insulated glass and rough sawn cedar soffits.

Three 150-kilowatt natural-gas-fired cogeneration power units in the new manufacturing building uses the by-product heat from the engines to preheat domestic hot water and provide energy to an absorption chiller for the air conditioning system. Rudolph and Sletten provided the expertise in the installation of the cogeneration system which saves on energy costs by reclaiming all of the waste heat for use in creating chilled water and preheating other water systems.

The facility is a design-build mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) project.
Rudolph and Sletten crews also self-performed all the concrete work for the project which resulted in superior quality and helped keep the project on schedule and under budget despite the long winter and strong cold wind that swept up from San Pablo Bay.

Rudolph and Sletten’s relationship became with Bio-Rad in 1985. The company built Bio-Rad’s corporate headquarters and a clinical diagnostics building. Later construction work included tenant improvements, office updates, a new training and laboratory facilities and the Life Science Building 2000.
